How to Extend the Life Span of Your Home’s HVAC System

Your HVAC system is one of the biggest purchases you will make for your Fayetteville home. Just like any other big purchase, it makes sense to maintain it so that it will perform reliably and last as long as possible. Here are some quick and easy tips for extending the life of your HVAC system:

  1. Change your air filter regularly. While small and inexpensive, your air filter has a crucial role to fill. It removes particles that reduce your indoor air quality, but can also lower your system’s efficiency and cause extensive damage. Inspect your filter regularly and replace it as needed.
  2. Clean your outdoor condenser unit. The indoor components of your HVAC system are largely protected by your home, but your outdoor condenser unit is not. Dirt and debris can easily build up and lower heat transfer across your outdoor coil, which will make your system work harder. Most dirt can be cleaned by simply hosing off the unit.
  3. Keep ventilation open. Pressure gradients and moisture in your HVAC system can cause many problems. If moisture builds up, it can create an environment for mold and bacteria to thrive in. Keeping your registers and doors open when possible will keep airflow at a sufficient level to avoid most problems.
  4. Keep an eye on your discharge pipe. Most HVAC systems have a PVC discharge pipe that leads out of the home. To ensure the system doesn’t become backed up, which can lead to serious damage, routinely inspect your discharge pipe and keep it clean. Watch it during the winter months, especially, to make sure it doesn’t freeze. Similarly, your A/C has a drain tube to direct condensation into a floor drain. Ensure that this does not become blocked or damaged in any way with an occasional inspection.
