Why You Shouldn’t Use Harsh Cleaners in Your Business

Professional at Business

Have you ever been distracted at work by a bad smell? Or has it ever been too cold or too hot, so you focus on the temperature more than on the deadline that’s slowly creeping up? Distractions no doubt reduce your productivity, but some can also be hazardous to your health. Harsh chemical cleaners, for example, may be affecting you in more ways than you know, even if your office smells like oranges. Many home and office cleaners release dangerous chemicals that will distract you from your work and damage your health.

Chemical Cleaner Health Hazards

Some cleaning products release dangerous chemicals called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Unfortunately, the companies producing these cleaners aren’t required to specifically list these chemicals on the can. These VOCs can be present in everything from aerosol spray products, to air fresheners, to rug and upholstery cleaners, and to furniture and floor polish, all under the guise of “fragrances” on the ingredients list. When airborne, these VOCs can contribute to respiratory problems, allergic reactions, headaches, and skin and eye irritation.

Cleaners and Productivity

Using air fresheners and chemical cleaners may not produce immediate results, but reactions will come eventually, whether you’re susceptible to allergies or not. As mentioned above, cleaners can cause a variety of health issues , some of which can become extreme enough that you or your employees may need to take some days off. In addition, any kind of illness or irritation will act as a distraction that will reduce productivity.

How to Stay Clean and Healthy

If you have to avoid these chemical cleaners, how will you keep your business clean? Believe it or not, some good ol’ soap and water will do the trick in most situations. Throw in some baking soda when you need to put in some elbow grease, and mix some vinegar with water to clean windows. And whenever you’re cleaning, ventilate the area well.
