As the winter cold settles in throughout the Lumberton area, the last thing you need is for your home’s boiler to suddenly stop working. When a boiler’s on the fritz, the pressure is on to get it working as soon as possible before things get chilly. Boiler troubleshooting can help.
Looking to find the cause of the breakdown and make efforts to have those problems fixed? Here are some boiler troubleshooting tips that can be a big help to you this winter:
- Boiler not working? First, check the circuit breaker and see if the circuit for the boiler has tripped. If your home uses fuses, check the fuse for the boiler and make sure it hasn’t blown.
- Pilot light out? If it’s a manual pilot, relight it according to the boiler’s operation manual. If the boiler relies on electronic ignition, press and hold the reset button for a few seconds until the boiler cycles on.
- Not enough fuel? Check the gas/oil lines for any signs of external damage, like kinks, dents and punctures. Check the burners and make sure they’re clean and in working condition. Make sure there’s enough oil available for operation.
- Boiler controls not working? Check the thermostat. Make sure it’s set to “heat” with the fan on “auto” and the temperature several degrees above the current room temperature. If the display is blank, make sure the thermostat has fresh batteries. If the temperature readings seem off, consider replacing it with a newer thermostat.
- Condensate pipe frozen? Gurgling and bubbling noises from the pipe or the boiler itself could signal one that’s frozen solid. Defrost the pipe and, as a precaution, consider insulating it from cold temperatures.
