History

Fayetteville was originally settled in 1736 by Scottish Highlanders who arrived by ship to find fertile land near the mouth of Cross Creek. Over time, the area became an important trading location, and its communities were merged into Campbelltown in 1780. In 1783, the town’s name was changed to Fayetteville to honor Revolutionary War Hero Marquis de LaFayette. Fayetteville was the location of the state convention to ratify the United States Constitution, but lost the race to become the state capital of Raleigh.
